Study a scanned textbook on your commute
Turn a scanned textbook into smooth listening for the bus or train, then revise from your own highlights.

- You need
- Text recognition (a one-time 38 MB download) and a voice for the book's language
- Set-up
- 5 minutes, the night before
- Features combined
- Scanned pages (OCR) · Studio mode · Sleep timer · Highlights · Skim · Quiz me
- Phone cost
- Studio mode does the heavy work while the phone charges, so the commute itself is light on battery
- Add the textbook. In the Library, tap Add book and pick the PDF. If its pages are scans, the reader says the page is scanned and offers the text recognition files: tap Download once. They cover English, Hindi and Bengali.
- Prepare tomorrow’s chapter. Back in the Library, press and hold the book, then tap Studio mode. It prepares the speech ahead of time with your voice and speed. Plug the phone in and leave it overnight.
- Listen on the way. Open the book, press play and lock the phone. Tap the timer icon and choose End of chapter, so reading stops at a natural break instead of mid-paragraph.
- Mark what matters. When a line is worth keeping, tap Bookmark this sentence in the player. Later, in the reader, press and hold that sentence and tap Highlight.
- Revise before the exam. Tap the speed button, open What to read and turn on Skim: you hear only headings, captions, the first sentence of each paragraph and sentences with bold terms.
- Test yourself. In the Library, tap ⋮ and then Quiz me. Each highlight becomes a question with one word left out, read aloud.
Why it works
Scanned pages are slow to recognise and the best voices are slow to render. Studio mode does both while you sleep, so nothing stutters on a crowded bus. The chapter timer matches how textbooks are split, and your highlights turn into revision without any extra writing.
If it goes wrong
The reader marks each scanned page with its recognition quality. If a page says poor, the scan is faint or crooked. Take a fresh photo of that page in good light with Point and read (Library ⋮). If a sentence sounds wrong, press and hold it and tap This sounded wrong, so the problem is noted with where it happened.
