None beyond normal listening
  1. Add the PDF with Add book. Many government files are typed in older fonts such as Kruti Dev, Chanakya, DevLys or SutonnyMJ, which look right on screen but are gibberish underneath. ListenLock recognises these fonts and reads the real words. There is nothing to switch on.
  2. Check the voice. Tap the speed button and look at Voices: the book’s language is listed first. Download the Hindi or Bengali voice if it is not there yet.
  3. Choose how tables sound. In the same sheet, open What to read and set Tables to Row by row for a budget or a list of names, or Summary when you only need the gist.
  4. Listen. Amounts are read the Indian way: “₹1,50,000” becomes “one lakh fifty thousand rupees”, and “₹500 करोड़” becomes “पाँच सौ करोड़ रुपये”. Read to suit the book notices an official text and reads it even and clear.

Why it works

Most text-to-speech apps read the hidden characters of old fonts and produce nonsense. ListenLock converts them first, then shapes numbers, money and tables into the sentences a careful reader would say aloud.

If it goes wrong

If a page is a scan rather than typed text, ListenLock offers text recognition instead (see Study a scanned textbook on your commute). If a name or term is said wrongly, fix it once in Words in every book and it is right in every document.
